Description
An exceptional heritage site in Wallonia, built atop a rocky spur in the heart of a vast 450-hectare nature reserve, Modave Castle boasts remarkable 17th-century stuccoes, carved paneling, tapestries, and murals from the 18th and 19th centuries.
The castle was home to prestigious owners, including the Count of Marchin, who shaped its current appearance. Other notable figures in its history include Maximilian Henry of Bavaria, Prince-Bishop of Liège, Cardinal von Fürstenberg, and the Montmorency, Lamarche, and Braconier families. Since 1941, it has been owned by Vivaqua.
One of the castle's rooms highlights the hydraulic wheel built in Modave in the 17th century, attributed to Renkin Sualem. This wheel likely served as a model for the famous Machine de Marly, which pumped water from the Seine to the Palace of Versailles.
Over 25 rooms can be explored through a multilingual audio-guided tour. Immerse yourself in the atmosphere of centuries past, thanks to the preserved decor and stories of the castle's distinguished inhabitants.
Enjoy strolls through the classified gardens, set out on marked trails in the nature reserve, and take part in numerous cultural activities offered year-round (concerts, theater performances, exhibitions, shows, themed tours, and more).
