The Castle Bouillon

The Castle Bouillon

Reserve

Description

Situated on three rocks above the Semois River, with its maze of corridors and large vaulted rooms, Bouillon Castle is considered the oldest and most interesting relic of feudalism in Belgium. The origin of the first fortifications dates back to the 8th century. It was immortalised by Godefroid, leader of the First Crusade (1096) and protector of the Holy Sepulchre, who sold the castle to the Archbishopric of Liège to finance his expedition to the Holy Land.

Finally, during the wars of Louis XIV, it was thoroughly rebuilt by Vauban and occupied by the army until 1830. "While visiting the castle, you can also discover another art form from the Middle Ages: falconry. Birds of prey were used in the Middle Ages for their sagacity in the hunt, but are now mainly used in shows.

Come and admire the majestic flights of eagles, falcons, owls and other birds of prey (show from 1/03 to 11/11). For the more curious, there is the permanent exhibition "Scriptura, from the pen to the PC", where you can find out more about the history of writing, from the Middle Ages to the present day.
